Hidden in the hills above the lake, Carcegna - a tiny stone hamlet of Miasino - seems suspended somewhere between past and present. Narrow medieval alleys wind between old houses, mountain water rushes beneath the pavement, and the silence is broken only by the footsteps of rare passersby or the sound of church bells.

“Slow down - in this village children still play in the street.”

And somehow, it is those words - “still play” - that suddenly touch something deep and powerful inside you.

For more than 25 years, many small towns and villages across Piedmont have gradually been losing their inhabitants year after year. But Carcegna seems to refuse to disappear — just like its leaning bell tower.

It is believed that shortly after its construction in the 17th century, the foundations of the bell tower of the Church of San Pietro were weakened by the waters of a nearby mountain stream, causing one side to sink. Local builders tried to stop the movement centuries ago by designing its pyramidal roof with an inclined axis to compensate for the shift in weight. The solution worked surprisingly well: for more than 350 years, the tower has maintained its lean of about 90 centimeters over a height of 29 meters.

Carcegna does not try to impress tourists. Instead, it offers the feeling of discovering a quieter, less polished side of Northern Italy — one that is slowly disappearing elsewhere.
