Cannobio
Cannobio is a charming town of about 5,000 inhabitants, located near the Swiss border on the shores of Lake Maggiore, in the Italian province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. The Cannobino River runs through the town, and the Swiss border is just 5 km away. Its unique blend of nature, history, and culture draws thousands of visitors every year.
Cannobio has the highest rental prices in the province — €18.5/m² — and among the highest property purchase prices at around €3,200/m².
The town has repeatedly been awarded the international Blue Flag for the quality of its beaches and, since 2011, also holds the Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club, recognizing excellence in tourism, environmental care, and cultural preservation.
Cannobio’s history dates back to Roman times — sarcophagi from the 2nd–3rd centuries AD were found here. The town was first mentioned in written records in 909. In 1207, it was granted autonomous administrative status. In 1342, its citizens voluntarily placed themselves under the rule of the Visconti family of Milan, which brought stability and further development as part of the Duchy of Milan.
During the Risorgimento, in 1859, the people of Cannobio successfully repelled an Austrian attack. To commemorate this act of resistance, a marble lion statue now stands proudly on the lakeside promenade. In 1944, Cannobio became part of the short-lived Republic of Ossola, taking a stand against the Nazi-Fascist regime. After World War II, tourism gradually became the town’s main economic engine, while many locals also began commuting to neighboring Switzerland for work.
Collegiata di San Vittore
Located in the heart of Cannobio, the Church of San Vittore is the town’s main parish church and one of its most significant religious monuments. First mentioned in 1076, the church took on its present form after a major 18th-century renovation. The neoclassical façade gives way to a richly decorated interior, featuring vaulted ceilings, elegant chapels, a beautifully carved wooden altar, and a painted dome. Dedicated to Saint Victor Maurus, an early Christian martyr, the church has long been a spiritual anchor for the community. It continues to host masses, sacred music concerts, and festive liturgies during local holidays.
Sanctuary of the Santissima Pietà
The Sanctuary of the Santissima Pietà is more than just a church — it is a symbol of faith and one of Cannobio’s most mysterious historical events. Built in the 16th century, the sanctuary stands on the site where, in 1522, an image of the Virgin Mary was said to have miraculously begun to bleed. Soon after, the region was struck by the plague, which — according to legend — spared Cannobio entirely. In gratitude, a chapel was built here, and it became a place of pilgrimage. The church’s understated architectural elegance — with its refined façade, spacious nave, and exquisitely adorned altar — continues to inspire awe. Every year on January 7, a solemn procession takes place to commemorate the miracle, making it one of the most important events in the life of the town.
Cannobio Lakeside Promenade
Cannobio’s lakeside promenade is the beating heart of the town and one of the most beautiful waterfronts on Lake Maggiore. It offers the perfect setting for a leisurely stroll: crystal-clear water, majestic mountains on the horizon, and vibrant 18th–19th century facades adorned with arches, boutiques, and cozy cafés. You’ll feel transported into a timeless world of stone houses, narrow staircases, and alleys descending to the lakefront — built in the past to shield residents from invasions arriving from the water.
As you walk along the promenade, it's hard not to fall in love with Cannobio’s atmosphere — the fresh alpine air, shimmering lake reflections, the quiet interrupted only by laughter, footsteps, and the clinking of glasses. At the town’s social heart, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, locals and visitors gather to enjoy life. On Sundays, the square hosts a lively market, soft music fills the air, and the true spirit of the Italian lakeside province comes alive.
How to get there?
By train: The nearest railway station is in Verbania Fondotoce, about 22 km from Cannobio. From there, you can take a regional bus to Cannobio.
By bus: Cannobio is served by 7 bus lines, including the main Verbania – Cannobio – Brissago route and a local town line.
By boat: You can also reach Cannobio by ferry from all the main towns on Lake Maggiore — both Italian (Intra, Pallanza, Stresa, Baveno, Fondotoce, Laveno, Luino) and Swiss (Locarno, Ascona, Brissago, Porto Ronco).

- Sant’Anna Gorge Loop. Starts from Sant’Agata. A moderate hike, suitable for most hikers, with well-marked trails. Duration: 2 hours 8 min, length: 6.2 km, elevation gain: 60 m.
- Monte Giove Panoramic Tour. A challenging circular trail starting from Cannobio, ideal for experienced hikers. Requires excellent fitness and a confident step. The round trip is 15.2 km long with an elevation gain of 1,060 m, average time: 6 hours 34 min.

Festivals & Concerts.
Festa della Santissima Pietà 2027
The Festa della Santissima Pietà is Cannobio's patronal feast, celebrated since 1522 to commemorate a miracle: an icon of Christ began to bleed, and a holy relic — a rib — was discovered, which is now kept in the Church of San Vittore. Residents decorate their windows and streets with candles, and boats on the lake accompany the religious procession.
