In the city of Ivrea, the Storico Carnevale di Ivrea takes place every year, with its central event being the Battaglia delle Arance — the “Battle of the Oranges.” This ritual symbolizes a popular uprising against medieval tyranny and is rooted in a local legend about the fight for freedom. Divided into teams, participants throw oranges in the city’s main squares, transforming historical memory into a vivid and spectacular performance. Today, the Battle of the Oranges is considered one of Italy’s most recognizable and unusual carnival traditions and the main cultural symbol of Ivrea.

In the second half of the 20th century, Ivrea developed as an experimental “city of the future” thanks to the vision of the Olivetti company. Under the leadership of Adriano Olivetti, the city was shaped not merely as an industrial area but as a complete urban ecosystem: factories filled with natural light, residential districts for employees, schools, kindergartens and cultural centres. Architecture was conceived as a tool to improve quality of life rather than a secondary element of production. This human-centred and systemic approach led to Ivrea being recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an outstanding example of a 20th-century industrial city.

The Italian company Olivetti, based in Ivrea (Piedmont), released the Programma 101 in 1965, is often regarded as the first personal computer in the world. It was a programmable device designed for a single user and did not require a centralized computing center. Programma 101 was used in banks, engineering, and even by NASA during the preparation of the Apollo space missions. It laid the foundations of the concept of personal computing decades before the emergence of home computers in the 1970s and 1980s.

According to the official website of the abbey, in 1937 the church of the Sacra di San Michele received “16 large sarcophagi made of green Malanaggio stone”, created to house the remains of princes and members of the House of Savoy.  Other cultural sources specify that these 16 sarcophagi, containing the remains of around 24 members of the Savoy dynasty, are located in the Old Choir (Coro Vecchio) of the church. These monumental tombs underscore the historical role of the Sacra as an important dynastic burial place for the Savoy family in Piedmont.

Many literary and cultural sources note that the Sacra di San Michele served as one of the architectural inspirations for Umberto Eco when shaping the atmosphere of the monastery in “The Name of the Rose”, one of the best-known works of contemporary literature. The Sacra, with its massive structure, ancient corridors, Zodiac Portal and dramatic position on the peak of Mount Pirchiriano, closely matches the kind of mysterious medieval abbey that Eco describes in his novel.

According to several tourist publications, the Scalone dei Morti leading to the Zodiac Portal in the Sacra di San Michele consists of 243 steps. The staircase is conceived as a symbolic “ascensional path”, emphasised by its architectural height and its monumental structure.

The Stairway of the Dead is located within the monastic complex of the Sacra di San Michele (Piedmont, Italy), on the slopes of Mount Pirchiriano at about 960 m above sea level. It begins at the entrance hall of the abbey and leads upward to the Porta dello Zodiaco, which gives access to the Upper Church. The staircase received its name because its walls were once lined with niches containing the remains of monks and benefactors.

The official website of the Sacra di San Michele states that historically the Scalone dei Morti contained “sette tombe più una” — seven tombs plus one additional burial. These tombs were used for the burial of abbots and benefactors of the monastery. Contemporary descriptions based on Sacra’s archival material explain that “this entrance hall was once used for the burial of illustrious men and abbots… of these tombs, only five remain today.” The remains of the well-known “mummies”, once displayed in wall niches along the Stairway of the Dead, were transferred in 1936 to a funerary chamber beneath the staircase, according to historical documents of the monastery.

Piedmont leads Italy in the number of Comuni Fioriti municipalities — a symbol of well-kept surroundings and love of nature. 27 towns in the region have received this sign from the Asproflor association for floral decoration and ecological development.

The only Italian who ever served as Secretary General of the IOC was Count Eugenio Giulio Maria Brunetta d’Usseaux, who held the position from 1908 to 1919. He was born in Vercelli, and his family name originates from the alpine town of Usseaux in Piedmont.

The Polytechnic University of Turin (Politecnico di Torino) is the first public technical university in Italy, founded in 1859. It currently enrolls over 38,800 students annually, with an employment rate of 87.5 %, well above the national average of 70.7 %.

Turin is considered the chocolate capital of Italy and the birthplace of the first-ever chocolate pralines, the famous Gianduiotto. They were created in 1860 from a blend of chocolate and hazelnuts.

It is found inside the Fort of Fenestrelle. The fort is made up of three fortified complexes: San Carlo, Tre Denti, and Valli-Valli, connected by a tunnel. Inside this tunnel runs a staircase with about 4,000 steps, stretching 3 kilometers, with an elevation difference of 635 meters.

It is located in the Fort of Fenestrelle, in the Val Chisone valley. The complex includes 3 forts and 7 redoubts connected by a wall that closely resembles the Chinese Great Wall. The wall stretches about 3 kilometers, linking various fortifications along the mountainside. In some parts, the wall reaches a height of 10–15 meters. Inside the wall runs a staircase that was used to transport ammunition and soldiers.
