Monte Rosa SkyMarathon is a legendary skyrunning race first held in 1993. Participants start in Alagna Valsesia and climb to an altitude of about 4,554 meters (Punta Gnifetti area), before descending back along glaciers and alpine routes. 

It is one of the few races that requires mountaineering equipment and, in its classic format, participation in roped teams. In addition to the main race, shorter distances such as the SkyRace are usually held, making the event accessible to a wider range of athletes. The race is considered iconic in the world of skyrunning and attracts elite athletes and extreme sports enthusiasts from all over the world every year.

The classic SkyMarathon is the flagship race: teams of two athletes run from Alagna to the high-altitude Capanna Margherita area (around 4,554 m, Punta Gnifetti) and back. This route crosses glaciers and requires mountaineering equipment, including crampons, rope, and helmet.

Alongside the main race, the program usually includes:

• SkyRace — a shorter and more accessible alpine race without glacier sections
• AMA VK2 — a vertical race focused on elevation gain

Participation is limited and requires prior registration through the official website. For the main distance, athletes must provide a medical certificate and demonstrate experience in high-altitude or technical races.

Weather and safety conditions play a crucial role: the course and schedule may be adjusted depending on snow and glacier conditions.
